How to keep your fall arrest block safe and usable: 5 essential tips
A standard fall arrest line significantly restricts your freedom of movement due to its limited length (max. 2 metres). With a fall arrest block, you have much more room to work. Imagine installing solar panels on a roof: with a fixed line, you have to keep moving it and reattaching it, whereas a fall arrest block allows you to move around until the line reaches its maximum length [Dv1] [mv2] . If you fall, the system intervenes immediately and you don't suddenly come to a halt with a hard impact.
More and more functions
Fall arrest blocks are used in a wide range of activities. In most cases, they are used as fall protection devices in vertical planes for safe working at height. But they are gaining more and more additional functions. For example, they can also be used for evacuations (lowering a victim to the ground) or rescues (hoisting a victim up from a confined space). That is why it is vitally important in every situation that the fall arrest block is suitable for the specific application and functions properly.
Five tips
A fall arrest block must be inspected regularly to ensure that it is still working properly. Use causes wear and tear, and parts can become dirty or less effective at cushioning. If you handle your fall arrest block with care, it will last longer. Here are five tips.
1.) Choose the right fall arrest block for your job
Not every fall arrest block is suitable for every application. Do you work in a dusty environment, or offshore where you encounter extreme weather conditions? Then a sealed block is better, because the cable housing and the brake housing are separated by a packing. This prevents contamination from reaching the brake, ensuring that it always works. Are you carrying out welding work? Then opt for a fall arrest block with a steel cable instead of a strap, so that it does not melt due to the heat. Is your fall arrest block edge-tested for working on sharp edges? This prevents cuts in the cable, which can have disastrous consequences.
2.) Always check before use
A quick pre-use check can prevent a lot of trouble. Is there an inspection sticker on it? Does the strap or cable still look good? No tears, fraying or dirt accumulation? Does the cable/strap block at all? A fall arrest block that is well maintained will last longer and is safer. You can learn how to perform a comprehensive pre-use check for all your fall protection equipment in our basic training courses.
3.) Store neatly
Don't just throw your fall arrest block in a corner after use. And don't leave it outside, for example on a roof. Hang it in a dry, clean place or store it in a storage box. This prevents unnecessary wear and tear and ensures that the block is always ready for use. Always wipe your fall arrest block with a cloth before storing it to prevent moisture and dirt from penetrating it overnight.
4.) Use the fall arrest block as intended
Make sure you attach the fall arrest block correctly and that the line is the right length. A line that is too short limits your range of movement, while a line that is too long poses unnecessary risks. Choose your fall arrest block based on the height and distance you need to cover. Also check how/where you attach the fall arrest block: many fall arrest blocks should not be attached at foot level.
Have your fall arrest block inspected on time
This is not a device that you “just use until it breaks”. Regular inspections by a certified company are a must. During the inspection, not only is everything checked to see if it still works, but the block is also cleaned and maintained. Fall arrest blocks must be inspected at least once a year. This is also laid down in the Working Conditions Decree and the European standard NEN-EN 365:2004. At Mennens, we advise you on the frequency of inspection of your fall arrest block, tailored to your type of work.
If you follow these tips, you will not only work more safely, but you can also be sure that your fall arrest block will do what it is supposed to do when it really matters.
