Podcast: connecting devices

Looking for the right connecting device for your working at height setup? Then you'll need to choose between the different types available. In this video podcast, Zakaria Abbou, Fall Protection Product Specialist at Mennens, and Martin Verkamman, Fall Protection Specialist at 3M, explain the options and how to make the right choice.

Connecting devices can be divided into two main categories: energy absorbing lanyards and self-retracting lifelines (SRLs).

Energy absorbing lanyards are available in lengths of up to two metres. They come in a range of configurations, including adjustable and non-adjustable versions, with or without an integrated energy absorber.

Self-retracting lifelines are available in lengths of up to 53 metres. These systems are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas and on wind turbine projects, where greater vertical travel distances are required.

What should you look out for?

How do you decide which connecting device is the right choice?

Zakaria Abbou explains:

"Start by considering the work you'll be carrying out. What do you need the connecting device for? How close will you be to the fall hazard, and what is the potential fall distance?"

Martin Verkamman adds:

"Always check whether the connecting device is suitable for the user's weight. The standard rating is up to 100 kg. If it is approved for higher user weights, this will be clearly stated by the manufacturer. One final tip: if you're working near a sharp roof edge or another sharp edge, make sure the device has been edge-tested. That way, it is designed to withstand contact with the edge in the event of a fall. Always seek advice from a fall protection specialist to ensure you select the right equipment."
