Tool tethering for working at height
Dropping tools while working at height can have serious consequences. So how can you prevent tools from falling? Preventing dropped tools is not only good practice—it is also a legal requirement.'' As Dirk van Blijswijk explains:
"You are required to eliminate the risk of dropped tools. That means ensuring that no one can be struck by falling objects."
Carrying tools safely
When working at height, tools are often carried in a tool bag. Zakaria Abbou explains:
"Every tool in the bag should be secured with a tool lanyard. The lanyard is then attached either to your harness or to your wrist, preventing the tool from falling if you accidentally drop it."
A fully loaded tool bag can quickly become heavy. Dirk offers this advice:
"Carry out as much preparation as possible on the ground or on the platform of the mobile elevating work platform (MEWP). That way, you avoid climbing or working at height while carrying unnecessary weight."
What if something still goes wrong?
Even with the right precautions, incidents can still happen.
Zakaria explains:
"Safety nets are an effective solution, particularly on construction sites where multiple trades are often working at the same time. Nets are available in different sizes, from smaller versions designed to catch tools to larger systems that can also protect people."
Dirk adds:
"Wherever possible, avoid having people work directly below those working at height. If that's unavoidable, make sure they wear a climbing helmet. That's how we keep everyone safe."
