1. Check How the Equipment Has Been Stored
Always take a moment to inspect how the equipment has been stored. Ideally, hydraulic cylinders should be stored upside down to prevent dirt or moisture from entering the cylinder. While a cylinder that has been stored differently may still be safe to use, proper storage is essential for maintaining the reliability and service life of hydraulic equipment.
2. Check the Inspection Date
Look for the inspection label on the equipment and verify that the inspection is still valid. If the label is missing or the inspection has expired, do not use the equipment. Choose a tool with a valid inspection instead.
3. Inspect the Hydraulic Hose
Check the hydraulic hose for signs of damage, cuts, abrasion or kinks. If you notice any defects, use a different hose. A damaged hose can fail under pressure and allow hydraulic oil to escape at high velocity.
4. Bleed the Pump
Residual air or oil trapped in the hydraulic pump can affect the performance of the equipment and make its operation unpredictable. Bleed the pump before use to ensure smooth and safe operation.
5. Check That the Correct Couplings Are Connected
Ensure the equipment is fitted with the correct hydraulic couplings and that they are properly connected. The couplings must be compatible with the equipment and rated for an operating pressure of 700 bar (10,000 psi).
After Use
Once you've finished the job, inspect the equipment again for any signs of damage. If no defects are found, clean it if necessary and store it properly so your colleagues can use it safely next time.
