To sling and move loads safely, it is essential to have the right knowledge and to take a number of important factors into account. In this article, we'll explain what to consider for each type of lifting equipment when slinging loads.

Why Is Proper Load Slinging Important?

If a load is not slung correctly, it can fall from the crane or hoist during lifting or transportation. Incorrect slinging can also cause lifting equipment to wear out more quickly or even fail. That's why you should always use suitable, certified, and inspected lifting equipment.

Always Keep These Points in Mind

A crane or hoist should always be positioned directly above the load, and the load should always hang level. Make sure the load is stable to prevent it from shifting during lifting.

Before slinging a load, always know its weight and pay close attention to its centre of gravity.

Above all, keep a safe distance from the load once it has been slung, and ensure that your colleagues do the same. Loads must never be lifted or moved over or near people.

Chains

When slinging a load with chains, make sure the chains are never twisted. Also avoid point loading, as this can damage the chain or hook. Lifting chains must not be used at temperatures below -40°C or above 200°C.

Never side-load hooks or connecting links, and always stay within the specified Working Load Limit (WLL). Keep in mind that lifting at an angle reduces the WLL.

When using a multi-leg chain sling, always connect the hook from the inside out. This ensures the hook is loaded correctly and the safety latch faces upwards.

Eyebolts

Fixed eyebolts made from C15 steel may only be used for straight lifts or lifts at an angle of up to 45°. Keep in mind that the Working Load Limit decreases when lifting at an angle.

Eyebolts made from high-grade materials can be used at lifting angles between 45° and 90°. Always check the Working Load Limit marked on the eyebolt. This rating applies to the most unfavourable lifting position, which is at a 90° angle.

The shoulder of the eyebolt must always be seated firmly against the load. This means the threaded section must be fully engaged and the eyebolt must be tightened so that it sits flush against the load.

Webbing Slings

Just like chains, webbing slings must never be twisted or knotted during slinging or lifting. Doing so can cause excessive wear and create unsafe lifting conditions.

Always use protective sleeves or edge protection when lifting loads with sharp edges to prevent damage to the webbing sling.

When lifting bundles of round materials, always use two webbing slings with opposing choke hitches to keep the bundle securely together.

Webbing slings must not be used at temperatures below -40°C or above 120°C.

Plate Clamps

When using horizontal plate clamps, be aware that the plate may bend during lifting. Always ensure the plate is fully inserted into the clamp before lifting.

When using vertical plate clamps, pay close attention to the lifting angle. The type of lifting eye fitted to the clamp determines the permissible lifting angle.

Beam Clamps

Beam clamps are often used incorrectly. A beam clamp is designed to create a lifting point and is not a lifting device itself.

A hoist can be attached to the beam clamp, allowing the load to be lifted safely from the created lifting point.

Lifting Magnets and Vacuum Lifting Equipment

When using lifting magnets or vacuum lifting equipment, loads must not be lifted or moved more than 1.5 metres above the ground.

The surface condition of the load, including any coating or finish, affects the Working Load Limit. For example, round materials provide less contact area for a lifting magnet, reducing its lifting capacity.

When tilting or rotating materials, always follow the manufacturer's operating instructions.
