So, what does a complete PPE system for working at height consist of?
Martin Verkamman explains:
"A fall protection system consists of three essential components: the full body harness, the connecting device, and the anchor point. The key is knowing how to combine these three elements correctly to create a safe and effective fall protection system."
Bring all stakeholders together
So, what is the best approach when your organisation is looking to invest in PPE for working at height?
Dirk van Blijswijk recommends involving all relevant stakeholders from the outset, such as procurement and your health and safety specialists.
"Bring these stakeholders together with a PPE specialist. Discuss questions such as: What will the equipment be used for? Under what conditions? How frequently? And, of course, what is the available budget? This makes it much easier to create a shortlist of suitable solutions."
Martin adds:
"When organisations follow this approach, they often take a significant step forward in how they manage working at height. As a result, the work usually becomes safer as well. It's also important to involve the end users. Organise fitting sessions so employees can try the equipment. This increases both acceptance and the likelihood that the equipment will be worn correctly and looked after properly."
Is one size enough for everyone?
Fitting sessions also help ensure that the equipment is genuinely suitable for the people who will be using it.
Dirk and Martin still regularly see organisations purchasing only XL harnesses, assuming they will fit everyone.
Dirk explains:
"A harness must fit the wearer correctly and be suitable for the user's body size and weight. A poor fit can compromise both comfort and safety."
Cheap can be expensive
Finally, where should you buy your PPE?
Dirk recommends purchasing from a specialist supplier.
"A specialist can provide expert advice and tailor the solution to your specific application. In many cases, choosing the cheapest option turns out to be the most expensive in the long run."
