Looking to select the right harness for working at height? What are your options, and what should you consider before making a choice? Find out in this video podcast.

Dirk van Blijswijk, Manager of the Expert Centre at Safe Site – Powered by Mennens, and Martin Verkamman, fall protection specialist at 3M, share their practical advice.

There are three main types of harnesses for working at height:

  • Basic harness

  • Work positioning harness

  • Sit harness (rope access harness)

So, which one is right for your application?

The answer depends on the type of work you perform.

Martin Verkamman explains:

"A basic harness has attachment points on the back and chest. It is commonly used for scaffolding, roof work, and structural work carried out from a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP)."

A work positioning harness features attachment points on the back, chest, and hips.

Dirk van Blijswijk explains:

"This type of harness is ideal for vertical work, such as on lattice towers, wind turbines, and cranes."

The third option is the sit harness.

"This is the most comprehensive type of harness. In addition to the standard attachment points on the back, chest, and hips, it also includes a ventral attachment point for rope access and abseiling. It is commonly used for rope access, rescue, and evacuation work," says Dirk.

One size fits all?

Besides the type of work you perform, what else should you consider when selecting a harness?

Martin explains:

"Unfortunately, the idea of one size fits all doesn't apply. You need to consider the body size and weight of the people who will be wearing the harness. A harness should fit comfortably—not too loose and not too tight."

Dirk adds:

"Don't compromise on comfort. Choose a harness that is easy to adjust and comfortable to wear. Workers often wear it for extended periods, so comfort is an important factor."
