On-Site Inspections of Lifting and Fall Protection Equipment: Keeping Your Equipment Safe and Operational

Want to be sure your equipment is safe to use? On-site inspections of lifting and fall protection equipment provide that peace of mind. They not only ensure safety but also help prevent downtime and demonstrate compliance with applicable safety requirements. For ground improvement and geomembrane installation specialist Cofra B.V., Mennens carried out a comprehensive inspection and certification programme across multiple locations, including Amsterdam and Haarlem.

Efficient Inspections in a Dynamic Working Environment

What makes this project particularly challenging is the working environment: a combination of transport and logistics, where equipment is constantly on the move and often needs to be available again at short notice. In such a dynamic setting, efficiency and a clear overview are essential.

From the outset, our focus was therefore not only on the technical aspects but also on ensuring a well-organised process. Before starting the work, we held a kick-off meeting with Cofra to coordinate the inspection programme. Together, we determined which areas and containers should be prioritised, how the work could be carried out safely and which equipment needed to be inspected first, for example because it was required for immediate use or scheduled to be shipped abroad.

Inspection of Lifting and Fall Protection Equipment

During the inspection week, we inspected and recertified a wide range of lifting equipment, including lifting beams, chains, lifting slings and other lifting accessories stored in containers or already in use.

At the same time, we included fall protection equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) in the inspection programme. This is particularly important for organisations whose employees work in varying environments, such as at height, on board vessels or in logistics areas.

Immediate Repairs and Individual Equipment Assessment

A key principle of the Cofra project was not just to inspect equipment, but to take immediate action where necessary. Equipment that failed to meet the required standards was repaired on the spot whenever possible. In other cases, complete assemblies were replaced. By carrying out these activities directly on-site, we prevented rejected equipment from being left unused and requiring additional maintenance appointments later.

Another important factor was our decision to complete the inspection process for each individual item. Rather than providing one comprehensive report afterwards, every piece of equipment received its own assessment and documentation immediately.

This gives customers complete clarity about the status of their equipment: what has passed inspection, what has been rejected, what has been repaired and what can be put back into service straight away. Especially when multiple teams or projects are operating simultaneously, this approach provides greater transparency, efficiency and peace of mind.

Individual Certificates for Every Piece of Equipment

Following the inspections, Cofra received an individual certificate for each piece of equipment. For equipment stored in containers and frequently shipped abroad, we also provided physical copies of the certificates. This ensures that the documentation always accompanies the equipment, even during extended transport periods or when used on-site without direct access to digital systems.

We deliberately chose not to issue combined certificates. Each piece of equipment has its own inspection status and corresponding documentation. This makes audits, handovers and international operations significantly easier and more transparent.

The Result: Safe, Operational and Compliant Equipment

The benefits of this approach are clear. Cofra now has access to safe, fully inspected and documented equipment that can quickly be put back into service. By combining immediate action, clear documentation and individual equipment assessments, we not only improve safety but also provide greater control over planning, compliance and equipment availability.
