Inspection of Horizontal Lifeline Systems at EECV: Annual Safety Inspection of Unloading Towers
Earlier this year, Mennens carried out the annual inspection of the fall protection systems on EECV’s unloading towers. Horizontal lifeline systems, anchor points, ladders, stairways and descent devices were inspected and certified.

Why Are Annual Inspections Important?
Fall protection systems are exposed to regular use, weather conditions and wear and tear. Regular inspections help prevent damaged equipment from being used, maintain certification and traceability, and provide documented evidence of your safety policy.
Scope of the Inspection
Horizontal Lifeline Systems
The horizontal lifeline systems were inspected and certified. They allow users to move safely along a walkway while remaining continuously connected to the system.
New system labels were fitted to two systems to replace missing labels. This supports identification, record-keeping and audits.
Anchor Points
Several fixed anchor points and wall eye anchors, including Type A anchors in accordance with EN 795, were inspected. A reliable anchor point is the foundation of a safe fall protection system.
Ladders and Stairways
Various ladders, combination ladders, step stools and access stairways were inspected. Because they are used intensively, these items often require particular attention during inspections.
Descent Devices
Descent devices, including Skylotec Milan systems, were also inspected. These are essential when a standard escape route is unavailable.
Results
Of the 48 items inspected, 47 passed. One ladder failed inspection due to damage and a missing stabiliser.
Failed equipment must be taken out of service immediately and replaced or repaired in accordance with the applicable requirements.
Additional Attention to Emergency Descent Provision
A structure with an attachment point for emergency descent equipment has been installed on the operator cabins of the unloading towers. EECV would also like this provision to be inspected based on its drawings and calculations.
This is important because a descent device is only as reliable as the attachment point it is connected to.

Digital Certification with Mennens Certif
Once the work is complete, all inspection records and certificates are updated in Mennens Certif. This makes them easy to access for audits, internal checks and maintenance planning.
“When working at height, almost right is not good enough. An annual inspection brings hidden wear to light before it leads to an incident.”
