Cable inspection at the UMCG: Safety first

At the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), various artworks are suspended from the ceiling. These objects hang daily above patients, visitors, and staff, contributing to a pleasant and inspiring environment. But wherever people come together, safety always comes first.

Over the past few weeks, Mennens has therefore been working intensively at the UMCG on a unique and challenging assignment: fully inspecting all cables and suspension systems used to secure these artworks.

Safety in a Critical Environment

Working in a hospital requires extra care. Not only because of the technical complexity of the assignment, but also because of the environment in which the work takes place.

The UMCG is a dynamic location where healthcare processes continue around the clock. This means inspection activities must be carefully planned and executed, with minimal disruption to patients and medical staff.

Every connection must be 100% secure. There is no room for doubt when objects are suspended above people.

What Does Such an Inspection Involve?

Inspecting ceiling suspension systems is specialized work. Our experts carried out, among other things:

  • Thorough visual inspections of all cables

  • Inspection of anchoring points and suspension structures

  • Assessment of wear, corrosion, and load distribution

  • Safe working at height using appropriate fall protection and working methods

In addition to the visual inspection, the technical condition and remaining service life of the materials used are also evaluated. Where necessary, we provide advice on replacement or additional measures.

Working at Height in a Healthcare Environment

An important part of this assignment is safe working at height. Our technicians operate in accordance with strict safety protocols and use certified equipment and personal protective equipment.

In addition, working at the UMCG requires:

  • Careful coordination with the facility management team

  • Clear communication regarding planning and work zones

  • Extra attention to hygiene and safety

Thanks to this approach, the work can be carried out safely and in a controlled manner.asset_image

Preventive Maintenance Prevents Risks

This inspection highlights the importance of periodic inspection of lifting and anchoring equipment, especially in environments where people are present beneath suspended loads.

Wear or material fatigue is not always immediately visible to the untrained eye. Preventive inspections help avoid unexpected risks and ensure that artworks and other suspended objects remain safely installed for many years.

Safety is not a one-time action, but a continuous process.

Proud of Our Contribution

We expect to complete the full inspection by the end of next week. This will allow the UMCG to continue enjoying its artworks safely for many years to come, maintaining the unique atmosphere they bring to the hospital.

We are proud that Mennens can contribute to a safe environment within the UMCG. Whether it concerns lifting equipment, fall protection, or specialized inspections: safety always comes first.
